IPFire 2.29 - Core Update 198 is here — and it’s a big one. This release brings a major upgrade to our Intrusion Prevention System with Suricata 8, delivering improved performance, deeper inspection capabilities, and greater reliability. But the real breakthrough comes in how IPFire keeps you informed: real-time email reporting and beautifully designed PDF reports now give you instant insight into network activity, highlighting critical alerts and providing a clear, auditable trail of every event. This all comes on top of the usual package updates and a toolchain update.

It is time to test the upcoming release of IPFire: IPFire 2.29 - Core Update 198. It is an important one that brings a major update to the IPFire Intrusion Prevention System, an updated toolchain, as well as various smaller bug fixes.

We have refreshed all IPFire images across our supported cloud providers — AWS, Hetzner, and Exoscale — and we are introducing support for Hetzner’s ARM instances for the first time. This release introduces a significant overhaul of OpenVPN, upgrading to version 2.6 with improved security, broader client compatibility, and a modernised codebase — all without requiring changes to existing configurations. System performance has also been optimised to allow the CPU to remain in power-saving states more often, reducing energy consumption. As with every release, this update includes a large number of package updates to ensure your system remains secure and reliable.

It’s been a long time since a new VPN technology was added to IPFire, but demand for WireGuard has skyrocketed as it’s rapidly become a popular choice in the industry.
