What is it?
The latest version of OpenVPN has been released and we should soon update to enjoy the latest features.
Who is working on it?
Current Status
The first release of OpenVPN 2.7 has just come out and has been tested by the IPFire developers as well as previous alpha, beta and release candidate versions. We are looking for a .1 or .2 release so that any regressions will have been ironed out upstream.
- Targeted Release: Unknown
- Tracker Bug: None
Description
Benefits to IPFire
Being close to upstream is a very fundamental goal of IPFire wherever possible as only the latest release will be supported and receive security fixes promptly.
OpenVPN 2.7 brings support for the in-kernel module for Data Channel Offloading (DCO). We are expecting higher throughput for supported environments (network topology & cipher suites have to be supported).
Impact
Every OpenVPN upgrade has caused a lot of trouble as a lot of features have been deprecated and removed in each release. In case of OpenVPN 2.7, there seem to be no breaking changes. However, since we have only recently upgraded to OpenVPN 2.6, we should ensure that the migration to version 2.7 is a smooth ride.

Dependencies
For DCO, the IPFire kernel will have to be upgraded to 6.18+ which is happening in Core Update 200.
